Solving Inbox Visibility and Scaling AI-Powered Marketing: Timberland South Africa's Journey to Smarter Customer Engagement

1.9X
Lift in Gmail open rate
2X
Click rate among previously unengaged subscribers
2X
More clicks turned into purchases
3X
More revenue per email sent

Timberland South Africa runs its CRM and lifecycle marketing end-to-end on Netcore.ai – email campaigns, marketing automation, AI segmentation and reporting, and inbox deliverability all sit inside one system. The brand had been running its email programme on Klaviyo, which handled sending well but wasn’t built to support the deeper segmentation, automation, and optimisation the team wanted next.
Over the past few months, Timberland migrated to Netcore, shifting from broadcast-style sending toward something more precise: addressing the inbox visibility challenge, adding conversational reporting, and building out AI segmentation and always-on journeys designed to recover revenue.

The work wasn’t a single fix. It ran as four parallel initiatives – inbox visibility (Netcore Inbox Visibility Optimisation [NIVO]), AI-powered reporting (Insight Agent), AI segmentation (Audience Agent) for campaigns, and an always-on journey programme anchored by cart abandonment recovery. Each moved a different number. Together, they gave a small marketing team a materially sharper picture of who was engaging, and why.

About Timberland

Timberland is the global outdoor-lifestyle brand built around the Original Yellow Boot, known for durable, weather-ready footwear, apparel and accessories. Timberland South Africa brings that same range to the local market through timberlandsa.co.za, running seasonal Sale, New Product and Weather-Ready campaigns across footwear, apparel and accessories, to roughly 300K-450K monthly website visitors.

Industry Context

South Africa’s online fashion and footwear market keeps expanding within an increasingly consolidated field, even as Shein, Temu and Amazon push on price and volume. Local retailers are being told to compete on service and relevance instead. South African shoppers abandon carts at rates up to 83.5%, against a global average closer to 70-75% (Growth Pulse Media, 2026), and footwear carries unusually strong brand loyalty locally (Accio, 2026). That was the backdrop Timberland’s team was working against with Netcore.ai.

Timberland made the switch from Klaviyo to Netcore as their marketing needs grew – Klaviyo covered email sending well, but the team needed a platform built for more than the inbox:

  • Email-only reach – campaigns stayed within the inbox, with no native way to extend into onsite or AMP-based engagement
  • Limited segmentation depth – audiences were grouped broadly, without AI-driven targeting by behaviour or affinity
  • No built-in optimisation – A/B testing and send-time optimisation weren’t part of the standard workflow, so campaigns went out on a fixed schedule rather than a tested one
  • Reactive support – guidance was available on request, rather than a proactive, strategic partnership

Closing those gaps meant Timberland’s team could finally pursue four goals that Klaviyo’s stack wasn’t built to support:

  • Solve the underlying inbox visibility gap – campaigns were technically delivered, but weren’t landing where subscribers would actually notice them, so even the strongest content and offers were going largely unseen
  • Move from broadcast-style email to AI-led, insight-driven marketing – using conversational reporting and AI segmentation for higher-relevance targeting
  • Strengthen sale-period performance with richer creative, including countdown timers, to build urgency
  • Recover otherwise-lost revenue through always-on journeys – cart abandonment, browse reminders, welcome series

Migrating that groundwork onto Netcore gave the team one system built for all of it – engagement, segmentation, and optimization together – rather than four separate goals each needing its own workaround.

Netcore worked with Timberland’s team to solve three problems at once: where campaigns landed, how quickly the team could see what was and wasn’t working, and who actually needed to see each message.

NIVO – Solving the Visibility Problem

Timberland’s emails were being delivered, but many were landing in parts of the inbox where customers were less likely to notice or engage with them. NIVO, Netcore’s Inbox Visibility Optimization program, helped address this by making campaigns more relevant to each customer’s interests and intent.

By prioritizing high-intent audiences and sending content they were more likely to engage with, NIVO helped Timberland build stronger engagement signals over time. This improved inbox placement and made its emails more visible to customers, giving every campaign a better chance to be seen and acted on.

NIVO went live for Timberland in May 2026 and ran for one month. Performance was measured against a non-Gmail control group to isolate the impact of the program from broader list-wide trends.

Insight Agent

Manual reporting and analysis to real-time actionable insights through conversations – you just ask the agent to get trends across campaigns or a revenue report and you get the answer immediately.

Affinity powered by Audience Agent

Category and Price Affinity AI segments went live, so campaigns could reach high-intent subscribers – grouped by the product categories and price points they were most likely to act on – instead of sending one list the same message.

Two further moves put that improved reach and precision to work:

  • Countdown-Timer Sale Creative
Netcore’s unified editor was used to add a countdown-timer element to the July 2026 sale-period creative, giving subscribers a visible, ticking deadline without changing who received the send.
  • Always-On Journeys
Timberland runs six lifecycle journeys continuously, each designed for a different moment in the customer relationship:

    • Cart Abandonment Recovery – triggers a personalised follow-up when a shopper leaves without completing checkout; the single highest-revenue automation in the account
    • Welcome Series – onboards new subscribers as they join the list; the largest-reach automation
    • Customer Thank You – a post-purchase flow that treats new and returning customers differently
    • High Intent Users – a win-back journey for shoppers who clicked but didn’t purchase
    • Browse Reminder – nudges shoppers who added to cart but didn’t return to checkout
    • Sign-Up Welcome – greets new on-site subscribers at the point of sign-up

NIVO

Once NIVO went live, resolving the inbox visibility problem, the same audience started seeing Timberland’s emails – and the pre/post numbers, checked against a control group, confirmed the difference wasn’t a list-wide trend.

  • Unique openers: 26.2% to 50.9% – a 1.9X lift
  • Unique clickers: 8.05% to 11.6% – a 1.4X lift

Previously unengaged Gmail subscribers (dormant): click rate went from 3.6% to 7.4%, About 2X.

Insight Agent

Instead of pulling a report to answer a question, the team started asking the question directly.

  • Blended 31% open rate and 2.16% click rate across all campaigns sent in June 2026
  • Both the blended figures and standout performers – like a Weather-Ready resend campaign that hit 68.51% open rate – came back in a single conversational query, with no manual export required.

Affinity powered by Audience Agent

Emails targeted using Price Affinity segments got more clicks, more purchases, and more revenue.

3.4%

Clicked (vs 2.2% on other emails)

2X

More clicks turned into purchases

3X

More revenue per email sent

The next phase for Timberland is less about adding new capability and more about extending what’s already running. The team plans to hold NIVO’s gains over a longer window before expanding it further, while the Affinity Segments and Insight Agent workflows built for this initiative give the marketing team a repeatable model for every future campaign, sale period and journey they build – infrastructure built once, not a one-off project. A broader conversation with the Netcore sales team about additional products is underway, though nothing beyond the scope covered here is confirmed yet.
