How a Leading Insurer Drove 70% Revenue Growth in ULIPs

Published : October 1, 2026

In insurance, personalization and compliance are often treated as opposing forces. The more tailored the communication becomes, the more complicated it can seem to manage securely and consistently.

One large life insurer found a different way forward.

With tens of millions of policyholders and a portfolio spanning long-term savings and protection products, the insurer already had the customer base, digital infrastructure, and brand trust. The opportunity was to engage customers more intelligently, particularly those who had gone quiet.

By rebuilding how customer data moved through its marketing ecosystem and connecting segmentation, journey orchestration, and customer-service interactions, the insurer achieved 70% revenue growth in ULIP Premiums & Protection in a single quarter through WhatsApp, while also delivering 200% ROI on email and RCS+SMS spend, 2X call-centre lead growth, and 4X campaign scale. Let’s understand what led to this kind of growth in such a short period of time.

A Strong Foundation, With More Performance Left to Unlock

The insurer had a long operating history and a strong position in the Indian life insurance market. Its customer proposition was built around customer-centricity, cost-effective products, consistent fund performance, and hassle-free claims.

This was not a business trying to repair a broken digital operation.

It was a business asking what its existing customer relationships could deliver if engagement became more precise and easier to execute.

One immediate opportunity stood out: customers who had been inactive for more than 90 days.

The insurer had millions of customer relationships, but reaching dormant policyholders effectively required more than simply sending another reminder. Four gaps limited the next stage of growth:

  • Segmentation: More precise targeting was needed across life stage, behaviour, and customer context.
  • Analytics: Campaign and customer data needed to come together so teams could act faster.
  • Operations: Multi-step journeys involved too many teams, tools, and manual processes.
  • Customer experience: Communications needed to reflect what a policyholder actually needed at that moment.

The requirement was therefore straightforward: greater agility and personalization, but without compromising security or compliance.

Strategy that led to growth in revenue from ULIPs

The insurer approached the problem in three stages.

1. Secure Customer Data

Before increasing campaign volume, the insurer changed how customer data was handled in CRM.

Previously, campaign processes could involve manual data movement and CSV exports. The new setup created a more controlled data flow, supported by 256-bit encryption, role-based access controls, and system-only data handling.

That mattered for more than security.

In a regulated category, personalization can only scale when teams are confident that customer information is being handled consistently and securely. The foundation had to be reliable before the operation could become more aggressive.

2. Using Martech & automation for campaign operations

The next step was reducing the operational effort required to build and launch campaigns.

Marketing and call-centre teams gained self-service capabilities through a dynamic journey builder, pre-built CRM and website connectors, and real-time dashboards.

Processes that had previously taken weeks could now be assembled, reviewed, and launched in hours.

Integrations across the CRM, website, call-centre systems, and data lakes also created a more connected customer view. Teams no longer had to work from disconnected pieces of information to understand what had happened with a customer.

That operational change became important as campaign volumes increased.

3. Experimenting with campaigns & personalization at scale

With the data and orchestration foundation in place, the insurer could move beyond broad audience campaigns and start engaging much narrower customer cohorts.

Hyper-segmentation at scale: Marketing began running 200+ targeted campaigns each month, each built around a specific customer need or trigger, from re-engaging dormant policyholders to nudging customers with products nearing expiry. Instead of sending the same message to a large policyholder base, teams could tailor the outreach to where each customer was in their journey.

Appointment-scheduling journeys: The call centre became part of the conversion journey rather than a separate handoff. During a single call, agents could send a personalized quotation along with a clickable appointment link. This eliminated several rounds of follow-up and turned what could have been a 3–4 step phone journey into one streamlined interaction.

Omnichannel orchestration: The same context carried across email, WhatsApp, SMS, and RCS. If a customer had just discussed a policy with an agent and received a quotation, the subsequent WhatsApp message could reflect that interaction rather than introducing another generic sales pitch.

The result was more than simply being present across channels. Each interaction picked up where the previous one left off, making the journey more contextual, coordinated, and less repetitive.

The Results?

The change produced measurable gains across both revenue and operations:

  • 70% revenue growth in ULIP Premiums & Protection in one quarter, driven by targeted WhatsApp campaigns
  • 200% ROI on combined email and RCS+SMS marketing spend
  • 2X year-over-year growth in call-centre lead volumes
  • 4X campaign scale, growing from fewer than 50 to more than 200 campaigns per month without additional headcount
  • Approximately 4% sustained lead-to-sale rate from improved appointment-scheduling journeys

The important point is that these results came together.

More campaigns did not simply create more activity. Better segmentation improved who was reached. Faster journey creation increased execution capacity. Coordinated communication improved follow-up. And the resulting customer interactions created more revenue opportunities.

What It Looked Like for Customers

Consider a policyholder who had ignored previous renewal reminders. Instead of another generic message, she received a WhatsApp communication containing her specific policy number, premium due, and a one-click appointment option.

The message gave her a clear next step without requiring her to search for policy information or navigate another process.

For the call-centre agent, the benefit was equally practical. Rather than finishing a call and waiting for another team to send the appointment details, the agent could share the link during the conversation.

The technology reduced the distance between customer interest and customer action.

What Insurance Brands Can Learn

Security enables personalization. In a regulated industry, strong data controls are what make deeper personalization possible.

Self-service creates scale. Reducing campaign execution from weeks to hours allows teams to run more relevant journeys without adding headcount at the same rate.

Omnichannel orchestration matters more than channel presence. Customers should not receive disconnected messages from different channels. Each interaction should build on the previous one.

Remove unnecessary steps. An appointment link sent during a live call can be more valuable than a carefully designed follow-up journey that arrives two days later.

Dormant customers can be a growth opportunity. A customer who has stopped engaging is not necessarily lost. The right context, timing, and next step can reopen the relationship.

Key Takeaway

The next opportunity is to extend the same model beyond targeted WhatsApp campaigns.

For email, the insurer can move from generic communication toward more context-rich, life-stage journeys. WhatsApp can evolve into a broader engagement hub across renewals, claims, advisory, and service interactions.

The underlying principle remains the same: use customer data to make the next interaction more useful, while keeping security and control built into the operating model.

For insurance brands, personalization does not have to sit on the other side of compliance.

When the foundation is secure, teams can move faster, journeys can become more relevant, and dormant customer relationships can become a meaningful source of growth.
